tea party for a cause

Let me tell you about the Home of the Learning Tea. It's an unassuming spot in historic Candler Park in Atlanta that serves up a charming tea service in an eclectic space filled with books, art, and vintage tablecloths. Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party is a coffeehouse, ice cream shop, bakery, a place to read, work, or just meet up with friends.

High Tea starts at 3 pm and reservations are required. Bonus: the price for High Tea service is $17! There are also other tea options that do not require reservations, so walk-ins are encouraged. The tea house is split into two rooms, the first includes the ice cream/bakery counter and cash register, alongside several tables and shelves stocked with vintage hats and books. The second room is lined with bookcases along one wall, and the other covered in a gallery of portraits and artwork.

It is important to know that Dr. Bombay’s is quaint. Do not expect a tea service similar to the Ritz. In fact, it’s the cozy atmosphere that creates the charm and intrigue.  It is apparent to any visitor that this is a key business in the neighborhood, as it offers up a venue to host all sorts of events for the community.

The most impressive component of Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party is The Learning Tea project. This project is based in India, providing life scholarships to young women in India without means or access to continue their education through university. The tea house offers guests a handful of ways to support scholars.

Every month, on the last Monday, the tea house hosts a private party from which proceeds are the main source of funding for the project. Dr. Bombay’s also has a book program, tea packs for purchase, and a general donation pot. To learn more about The Learning Tea project and ways to support, please visit TheLearningTea.com.

If you ever find yourself in or near Candler Park, I highly recommend visiting this delightful tea house. It’s one of a kind charm, the inexpensive tea service, and the fact that sales fund their scholarship project for impoverished, young women makes this place a must visit spot!
