eight things to do before you travel

Whether you are a traveling expert or a novice, preparing for a trip can sometimes be stressful. To make the process a little more convenient, I've jotted down the tasks I do before travelling.

  1. I always make a packing list. I just use the notes app on my phone since, the checklist feature makes it helpful when actually packing, but any notes app or a handwritten list will work. Prior to building my list, I look up the weather and think about specific events I’ll be attending while traveling. My list always covers the following: shoes, bottoms, tops, jackets/blazers, tees/tanks, underwear, socks, bras, activewear, and evening/formal. I also add outfits for events, work wear, or resort wear, depending on my destination. After clothes and shoes, I add skincare, beauty, hair tools and products, and jewelry/accessories to the list. Finally, I add cables/chargers, electronics, notebook, and medication.

  2. Next, I add the countries I am traveling to onto my cell phone plan. AT&T makes it simple. You just log in and choose the countries, and either choose a prepaid international travel plan or just use the $10 per 24 hours feature enabling you to use your phone with the same plan you would at home.

  3. I inform my credit card company, especially when traveling abroad. Most companies allow you to just log into the app and set this up. If you cannot find this feature within your app, just call them. I highly recommend doing this for your debit card and your travel credit card or most-used credit card.

  4. I take photos of all my travel documents (passport, drivers license, credit card, health insurance card, etc.) and save them in a locked note on my phone. It is also a good idea to send to your emergency contact while you are traveling for an extended period (usually a sibling, parent, or best friend).

  5. I email my itinerary to my family and/or best friend(s).

  6. I pack a travel wallet if I am traveling abroad or sometimes just clean out my everyday wallet. I only carry credit cards and the cash in the currency I need. I leave everything else behind. As someone who has been mugged in Italy, trust me when I say the less you carry, the better!

  7. If I have bills due while I am traveling for an extended period, and I know I won’t have easy access to wifi (or will have intermittent access), I pay bills ahead of time. Especially, rent!

  8. Finally, I empty the fridge of perishables. I take out the trash, water the plants, and let my front office (or anyone collecting packages in your building) that I will be gone. If you are leaving on an extended leave, let the post office know, so, they don't deliver packages and mail while you are out. You can collect it at the post office upon your return.
